Volunteer Opportunities

Vermont's Own Nutcracker

NUTCRACKER BOUTIQUE

Many volunteers are needed to support our beautiful Nutcracker Boutique where Nutcracker themed gift items are sold in the Flynn lobby during all performances. Volunteers are needed to assist with the buying and pricing of goods to be sold, as well as set up, sales, and break down of the Boutique during performance week-end. Volunteer lists will be posted shortly after our Saturday rehearsals begin in October.

PROGRAM ADVERTISING

All ads in our Nutcracker program cover the cost of the program itself with any extra funds going directly into the production. Please consider helping us by either purchasing an ad, if you own your own business, or perhaps soliciting an ad from a local merchant that you frequent yourself. Do you have a friend or family member with their own business that is willing to support this exciting event? Our audience is about 5,000 strong, a lot of visibility!! Email Michele Fodero at mtf@vbts.org or call 878-2941 for details.

SEWERS

Many sewers are needed for minor repair jobs on costumes. If this is an area you enjoy and you have time while waiting for your child to get out of class or rehearsal, please see Mel in The Dance Shop for details, call her at 879-7001 or email thedanceshop@vbts.org . Needle and thread provided!

DRESS REHEARSAL MONITORS

We have 7 groups of dancers that need to have monitors with them for this rehearsal. They are: Mini-Mice, Angels, Clowns & Polichinelles, Soldiers, Party Girls/Elves, Party Boys & Big Mice. We need 2 monitors per group (except for the Big Mice, they only need one parent, mostly to help getting in and out of their costumes) The monitors arrive 45min. before the scheduled rehearsal time they have signed up to help with, and assist the dancers getting into their costumes to be ready when the "Runner" comes to get them to go backstage ready for their rehearsal. The monitor stays backstage to watch the rehearsal and when the dance is done and they are told they can go back down to their dressing room to change, the monitor brings them down, helps to get them out of costume, dressed in street clothes, hangs up all costumes then brings the group, as a whole, to the audience where their parents are instructed/waiting to pick them up. Volunteer lists will be posted a few weeks before the performance week-end.

DRESS REHEARSAL RUNNERS

From our list of Monitors we will select a few parents to be Runners. The Runner is in charge of bringing the group of dancers from their dressing room area, along with their monitor, to the backstage area ready for their rehearsal. The runner then leaves the group in the hands of their monitor and the backstage crew and goes to retrieve another group to be brought backstage. The runner works directly with the backstage crew so we look for a parent who is very familiar with the crew and the production.

PERFORMANCE MONITORS

Performance Monitors must arrive 1 hr. prior to scheduled performance. Remain with your assigned group, assisting them with their costumes to be ready when the "Runner" comes to get them to go backstage for their dance. The Monitor stays backstage to watch the dance, after which they are brought back down to their dressing room where they stay until the "Runner" once again comes for them to line up for the Finale/Bows. After bows the Monitor helps to get them out of costume, dressed in street clothes, hangs up all costumes and stays with them until they are all met by their parent to go home. Volunteer lists will be posted a few weeks before the performance week-end. If you sign up to be a Performance Monitor you must be able to stay for the entire performance.

PERFORMANCE RUNNERS

From our list of Monitors we will select a few parents to be Runners. Runners must arrive 90 min. prior to scheduled performance. The Runner is in charge of bringing the group of dancers from their dressing room area, along with their Monitor, to the backstage area ready for their dance. The Runner then leaves the group in the hands of their monitor and the backstage crew and goes to retrieve another group to be brought backstage. The runner works directly with the backstage crew so we look for a parent who is very familiar with the crew and the production.

PERFORMANCE USHERS

6 Ushers per show are needed at the Flynn. Ushers must arrive 90 min. prior to scheduled performance to meet with our VBT contact and the Flynn Spirits contact to discuss job descriptions and policies. Volunteer lists will be posted a few weeks before the performance week-end.

LOADING CREW

4-5 Loading Crew volunteers meet at our storage facility in Essex to load all props and sets onto rental truck the morning of the Thursday before dress rehearsal, then again to unload everything back into the facility after both Flynn performances on Sunday evening. We will let you know the exact times as we get closer to performance week. Volunteer lists will be posted a few weeks before the performance week-end.

SPRING PERFORMANCE
Celebration of Dance

DRESS REHEARSAL  MONITORs

Please enter through Flynn’s Green Room Door at the back of the theater. 1 Monitor per class/dance, arrive 45 min. prior to scheduled rehearsal time (will be posted soon). Stay with the class/dance, helping to get them dressed and ready for their rehearsal. When the Runner comes for them, the Monitors go with the class to the backstage area. Once their dance is done, bring them back to their dressing room to help them prepare to go home then bring them to their parent/guardian waiting in the audience. Remind parents/guardians they can now take their child to the lobby for photos to be taken by Beltrami if they so choose. Once your entire class has all been picked up you are free to go.

Performance Monitor*

Please enter through Flynn’s Green Room Door at the back of the theater. 2 Monitors per class/dance for each performance, arrive 1 hour prior to performance. Stay with the class of wonderful dancers, helping to get them dressed and ready for their dance. When the Runner comes for them, the Monitors go with the class to the backstage area. Once their dance is done, bring them back to their dressing room until the end of the show when the Runner will come to bring them up for the Parade/Finale. Again Monitors go to the backstage area with the class and wait until bows are complete then bring them back to the dressing room to help them prepare to be picked up by their parent/guardian. *EXIT PLAN! All dancers in CID, CID II, CIB and Ballet I will be picked up at the Green Room door, while Ballet II and up are to exit through the audience to the Flynn lobby.* Monitors can bring (but are not required) small and neat little crafts to occupy the dancers while waiting. You do not need to monitor your child’s show. In fact we prefer you to be able to watch and enjoy it all from the audience, but it is your choice.

*Each Performance Monitor receives 1complimentary ticket to the show of choice. See or email Michele to receive comp ticket, do not contact the Flynn directly for it! mtf@vbts.org
